I can sum up our experience with nice atmosphere, friendly staff and decent service. Beyond that, there is much to improve on. First, the silverware had a hazy film that made it look as tough it wasn't rinsed. That was a big turn off. Second, the menu listed a Chicago style Italian beef sandwich. There was nothing Chicago about the style in which it was prepared and absolutely no Italian seasonings whatsoever. In fact, it was basically tasteless meat on a bun except for the heaping hot peppers that over powered the sandwich. I paid $1 more for the handout fries and they were delicious, but I don't understand the $1 up charge. The menu is also very difficult to read and appetizers are a little pricey. They have done well with keeping the music on in the bar so that you get a little background noise but wan still hold a conversation in the dining area. My hope is that the chef does a review of the menu and a tasting with someone who has a palate. It's an out of the way place and won't last long if the food doesn't improve.

Not very good at all. I had the Philly, which was small and not much tastier than a Subway sandwich. My wife got a rare filet, and she complained it had a sour flavor and couldn't eat it. We asked for a refund and got it. The staff was pretty young and tended to hang around the hostess station talking. The young lady answering the phone was polite, but answered the phone with her name, not the name of the restaurant. I thought I had called the wrong number. Pretty decor, but otherwise not a very good experience. Will steer clear in the future.

My first visit was just ok, but I intend to go back sometime as it seemed promising. The dining room was so dark I struggled to even read the menu. The waitress said our table light was out. I'm not sure why they seated us there in a nearly empty restaurant. Yes, the location is nearly impossible to find, so Hideaway (or Speakeasy) is an appropriate name. Just go behind the Taco Johns near the Home Depot and look for a nondescript building. If the rent is cheap here, they sure didn't pass it along in their prices. I had the Hawkeye - roast beef, mushrooms, pepper, onion, bacon and cheese. It was $10 with a side but it's a buck up-charge to get fries, which were very good. The sandwich was huge, I took 1/2 of it home for lunch the next day. Not keen on the bread it came with. The menu said sourdough but it appeared to be a hearty Texas toast and very lightly toasted. I probably won't order it again. The app menu was interesting, so we might come for drinks and apps in the bar.

I really appreciate how prompt and personal the service staff is. After 2 or 3 times they remembered me by name. The pizza is unique and high quality and the prices are very reasonable. I've only experienced the restaurant part and not so much the bar, but I can't recommend this place enough. Casually classy. Comfortable but very clean. I don't want to oversell it, but I fully recommend it.

Only a hideaway in that it's behind a Taco John's and a secondhand sports equipment store...otherwise that space is strange. The entire space is almost completely open, with a few smaller 'walls' outlining the seating/dining area, with a large open space between these seating areas and the large, mid-tall bar area. Any customer at the bar can see any other customer in the entire place, from seats to the bathroom and everywhere in-between. Negative points there. Beer selection, on tap and in bottler/can is decent. Once upon a time it would have been above par, but most places today have 9/10 the same selection and usually lower prices. Some craft brews, all on offer in a tall 22oz pour, but the selection and service gets a 'meh'. I had the spicey chicken rangoons (7/10) and the 'Hawkeye' sandwich, which was served on Texas Toast instead of the Sourdough the menu stated. Overall the sandwich was tasty, but the Texas toast was soggy/mushy and gave the whole thing a doughy texture. great potential here, awful execution as it stands. I visited on a saturday morning and the staff was attentive if overly relaxed (multiple employees were sitting at the bar nearby , horseplay and gossip in the air) with multiple TVs playing the game (Iowa Hawkeyes FTW!). A little separation of bar/seating areas would do wonders for the overall 'theme' of a hideaway, and some way to fill the massive empty space between the two would do wonders. lighting was right for the most part, but the inclusion of some cheap video games and the associated children running around killed the overall vibe. Great potential, poor execution as it stands. 2 1/2 stars, honestly. Price was a bit high for overall quality and service.

Came with high expectations after reading all the other reviews. Italian beef and Reuben weren't as good as we hoped. Nice atmosphere, good service, nice menu, average food. Would probably go back and try some other things on the menu.

Atmosphere: Went for dinner. I don't remember much atmosphere music. There was a good amount of people there, and it was a positive feeling. I wish it wasn't located behind a Taco Bell, next to a storage facility. That's the worst part. Once you're inside, it's a really great restaurant. But location is important, which is why I'm giving 4/5. Service: Great service. The waitress was very friendly, open, and capable. Everything you'd want in a waitress. Food: Food was really spectacular. We had the chicken won tons (GET THEM! They are worth a mean in themselves.), Filet, and an Italian sandwich. All amazing choices. We would love to become regulars of this place.

4 stars here... They missed the fifth star for service... After finding this hideaway we had trouble finding parking, which is a good sign. Got in quickly though for how busy it was. Started our night with the Redneck Nachos which were amazing. The cheese sauce had a little hint of spice, fries were great and the pulled pork was flavorful and tasted like it had been slow cooked all day. I ordered the Rachel and it came out piping hot! The turkey was great and the coleslaw added an interesting touch to the sandwich. I was excited for the Apple Jack cheese that was on numerous items on the menu, but the slaw overpowered the sandwich a bit. It was a heavy sandwich so if you get appetizers this would be fine to split. The service lost their star because there were about 3 times that we sat with EMPTY glasses, one of my biggest pet peeves. After sitting about 6 minutes without drinks we had to flag the waitress down... The atmosphere was great because there was such a mixed crowd! This just showed that everyone that tries this place comes back for more!!! Can't wait for our second visit when we try the pizza!!!

Okay, this is like a breath of fresh air to CR. Not the same old thing on everyone else's menu. It's new blends of spices. The hand breaded ( very light I might add) chicken tenders with homemade honey mustard, delicious. Smothered chicken sandwich on a toasted bun. I was really going to take some home, but it was so good it got finished. Will definitely be back, over and over. I love that it's tucked away off First Avenue, fits the namesake! D. O'Brien

We started with the stuffed mushrooms which were super yummy! I had the shrimp Rangoon pizza, unique and tasty. But it lacked shrimp. My friend had a pasta which was okay, a little to cheesy for my taste. Cute place an beyond excellent customer service!! I will be back.

Try to get to Emil's a few times a month but is pretty full most nights...but worth the wait. Have always had prompt and pleasant service whenever we have been there, even when they are busy. IMO, the stuffed mushroom appetizer is the best in town along with their Rachel sandwich. Their building has been completely remodeled and has nice room to get together with a group of friends and family, If you are looking for good value and a menu that has something for everyone you wont be disappointed.

Great food in a subdued atmosphere. Had the Asian shrimp salad and broccoli cheese soup. Salad had all kinds of interesuing crunchy fresh veggies, wonton strips and housemade sesame ginger dressing. Soup was rich and cheesey.

Anyone complaining about the lack of lighting, you do realize its called The Hideaway now, right? This isn't just a great deli shoved into a tiny building anymore. This is more of an upscale dive bar and restaurant and a breath of fresh air in this town. And that's something this city of 5 smells could use. The art on the wall is superb, I wanted to buy a couple but they aren't for sale.. Yet.. ;) As for the food, I've eaten here 5 times, haven't had the same thing twice or a bad meal yet. The shrimp Rangoon pizza is out of this world, followed closely by the Thai Chicken. OUTSTANDING! The dynamite shrimp blew my tongue out of my mouth with the cavalcade of flavors. My woman absolutely loves the pickle chips.. Whatsthat? I haven't had a burger in this town that can compare to what these guys are doing in the kitchen. I hear they're hand grinding all of the hamburger meat in house and it surely tastes like it. This place hasn't been open 2 weeks and its completely surpassed any expectations I had. Every sandwich I liked at the old place has been improved. No more sliced deli meats, these guys are roasting their own chicken and turkey breast in house.

Ordered the Lobster Mac & Cheese for $14.95. Service was good and received our meal in very timely order considering how busy they were. Our waitress was very good so thanks to her. However, the meal itself was not good at all. The wine sauce tasted metallic( I know that's not helpful) and looked like some kind of plain white sauce, but no lobster as it had only some little shrimp in the dish. Menu clearly says lobster. I admit to being a woosey about heat, but it had hot chilly pepper flakes in it which was not stated in the meal description(like dish is spicy, etc.). Had my wife check it as she is better than I about heat and she agreed. Did order a side salad and it was fine. Forget wife's meal, but she didn't like it either. Finally, that being said we came here because of past experience with there American Classic Burger which was outstanding. Guess you have hit and miss at times, but not sure we will go back again for other than the burger as a carryout.

I travel frequently for work and depend on yelp for my daily meal recommendations. I had the pleasure of stumbling upon Emils yesterday for lunch. The location is hidden behind a few other businesses, but don't let it's location fool you, the food here is top notch. My counterpart and I were greeted and seated promptly, and I was quick to decide on one of their "house speciality" sandwiches. I love spicy food and asked the waitress for a side of the hottest condiment in the kitchen, to which she replied ....I don't know spicy very well there is some sriracha I can bring you. I replied with a chuckle and said that was like ketchup to me... My sandwich was delivered a few minutes later by what appeared to be the chef on duty. He said he wanted to be the one to deliver my sandwich because he made me a special hot sauce concoction and thought he should warn me that it may be hot. The corn beef in my Reuben sandwich was superb and the fresh cut fries where perfectly crisp, AND the hot sauce from scratch was exactly what I needed to my make experience fantastic. To top it all off the prices were very reasonable. All I can say is if you have a chance to stop by this gem DO SO. You will be pleased.

WHAT!?! These fries were hand-peeled, hand-cut, hand-boiled, frozen for who knows how long, deep fried, and hand seasoned, all before they even reached my plate, and you have the audacity to charge me one whole dollar!?!? Anyway I'd like to say I think the location is fine. The name of the restaurant is Emil's HIDEAWAY. The restaurant is hidden... away... but if that wasn't intentional then whatever. The food was good and portion sizes were everything they should be. I am a foody and I understand the food and labor costs that go into FRESH HANDCUT/HANDMADE FOOD. I emphasis this point because it grinds my gears when people want fast food prices for 10x the quality. Service was great, keep it up. Again I was very, very happy with the portion sizes for the price of HANDMADE appetizers and sandwhiches. Right on par with other restaurants that serve the same type of food. The pork tenders appetizer was phenomenal! I think they might use pork belly which is a littly fatty for my taste, but I was completely fine with cutting those parts off. Some kinks to be worked out, but that is to be expected from a new place. In conclusion, if you are more than happy to eat the "protein" at Taco Bell, or you think Applebee's is the best thing sinced sliced bread, this is not the place for you.

Atmosphere: Went over lunch. Soft music was played from the bar, allowing you to hear the music and carry on a conversation. Service: We were greeted as soon as we walked in and seated right away. Server was very quick with our drinks and returned shortly after to take our food order. I thought the food was out from the kitchen in pretty quick time for a lunch crowd. Food: The Philly was great. About the closest thing to a sandwich from the City of Brotherly Love you can find in Cedar Rapids. Had the Mac & Cheese as a side. It was good. I'll be back again and look forward to trying different things on the menu.

My wife and I really enjoy this place! We have been here 6 or so times, and we have tried a bunch of things. I think there was only one thing that I really didn't like, but my wife loved it. The food is tasty and the beer was served in a super frosted mug. I like the Italian beef and the Cuban.

We are not from that area but saw the reviews on yelp and decided to give it a try because we were close by. We were in a rush and told the hostess so. She got a seated immediately, the waitress came within one minute and took our drink and food orders at the same time. We were served in less than 10 minutes and were out the door in under half an hour. Liked the cool atmosphere, servers were friendly, the food was delicious. Very happy with this experience and will definitely go back next time we're in town.

I have to start by saying that I absolutely LOVED Emil's Deli on C Avenue, and was severely disappointed that it closed. Pretty much everything I had there was wonderful. When I heard they were opening a new location... where Hamburger Mary's used to be... I was skeptical. This location alone will be the downfall of this place, regardless how good they are. It is out of sight, and thus out of mind. Unless they are so special that they bring in a large core customer base, I give them two years max. The location is that bad. Which gets us to... how good (read: special) are they?. Oh, wow, as much as I liked the deli on C Avenue, this place severely disappointed me. I've been twice. Once for lunch, and had the French Dip, which was good, but not as good as before. Second time went with family and friends for dinner (we go like clockwork, once a week). My wife and I each tried a pizza, and shared, and both of us felt the pizzas were bland and boring. I tried the Hawkeye (basically a Philly sandwich pizza w/1000 dressing), which had virtually no taste whatsoever. My wife had some peanut Thai chicken thing, which was ok, but certainly not memorable. Our friends has basic burgers, etc. Everybody commented how overly salty everything tasted, including the appetizers. Prices: The meals are decently priced. No complaint there. The appetizers are outrageously priced. They start in the $5 range, with most being in the $8 to $9+ range. $9 ($8.95, technically) for six average-sized apple-jack cheese sticks (which don't even have apples or apple flavor, I found out) is out of line. Basically, $1.50 each. If they were huge, or had a unique and special taste, then maybe. They were neither. I won't make that mistake again. Service: Nice and friendly. They get a 'thumbs up' from me there. They do seem to have the place over-staffed a bit. There were several people who looked like employees looking for something to do. Atmosphere: More trendy nightclub-ish semi-loud than I would like, but not bad. The place is well laid out and there are relatively quiet corners if you just want to have a nice meal and not be a party animal. Overall: The unanimous consensus in our group was that we'd go once-in-a-blue-moon for a change of pace, but feel no need to make it a regular stop. As for myself, I'm seriously disappointed. I'll be back a couple more times because I know what these people *can* do, but I think I'll stick to the standard fare they brought from the deli and skip the new stuff. If they get better, I'll revise my review and give more stars.

Very nice atmosphere & food was delicious! We were huge fans of Emil's Deli on C Ave and this includes some of the favorites from there and adds a whole new dimenson! Very nice and we will go back and will recommend Emil's Hideaway to our friends!

Quiet away from main stream congestion. Great food and drinks reasonable priced. Friendly fast service that accommodate to the needs of their clientele. This place was recommended by friends to try and it was well worth it.
